An infusion set works a lot like an IV line does. It includes two parts. The first is called a cannula, a tiny plastic tube that has a small needle on one end, which is inserted into the subcutaneous fat layer just under the skin. The other end of the tube connects to the pump which delivers insulin to the body.
These are often included with the purchase of an infusion set and allow for a quicker, easier, and more accurate insertion of the cannula beneath the skin.
Pumps require a cartridge or reservoir to hold the insulin and deliver it through the infusion set. Specific pumps are compatible with specific cartridges and reservoirs. These are usually changed along with infusion sets every 2-3 days.
This new insulin delivery system eliminates the need for an external pump and tube. The port attaches directly to the abdomen for more discreet dosing and added comfort.
