Pulse Oximeters
Pulse Oximeters
Pulse oximeters are small, lightweight monitor devices that painlessly attach to your fingertip to monitor the amount of oxygen carried in your blood and body. Why do you need to know this? Not everyone does, however, those suffering from respiratory conditions such as COPD, asthma, sleep apnea, lung disease, mesothelioma and other respiratory ailments often require a pulse oximeter as part of their daily treatment regimen. Monitoring your oxygen saturation level will help you to adjust your oxygen flow at home, during exercise, and during social activities. It can also assist your doctor in deciding if your COPD is getting worse.
What does oxygen saturation tell you?
Essentially, a pulse oximeter is a quick and painless way to measure how well oxygen is flowing through the body as measured in a percentage. Results ranging from 95 to 100% are considered healthy and normal. Numbers lower than these may indicate the likelihood of a respiratory disease or problem.
How does a pulse oximeter work?
It couldn’t be easier. Simply place your fingertip inside the pulse oximeter device and in seconds you’ll get a reading showing your oxygen saturation percentage. Many devices also display pulse rate and pulse intensity.
Athletes and pulse oximeters
Pulse oximeters are often used by athletes who engage in high-intensity workouts, especially when they are performing at high altitudes where the air is less oxygenated, or they are coming off an injury. Additionally, by tracking oxygen saturation levels during and after intense workouts, athletes can make more informed choices about how hard to push themselves and when to take breaks between circuits in order to optimize their workout.
Do you need a pulse oximeter?
If you’re considering one for respiratory issues and not just for fitness, then the only person who can answer this question is your doctor. If you have recently been diagnosed with diabetes and also have been dealing with a respiratory condition, talk to your doctor about how diabetes may complicate your respiratory problems by causing increased inflammation. Not everything is understood about the relationship between diabetes and lung issues, but studies indicate that there is certainly a connection.
