Insulin Syringes
Insulin Syringes
Everyone living with Type 1 diabetes and many with Type 2 diabetes require insulin to help regulate blood sugar and avoid diabetes related complications, including cardiovascular disease, kidney disease and nerve damage.
These days, there are a variety insulin delivery options individuals can choose from, including:
However, many individuals continue to use insulin syringes both because of convenience and cost. Additionally, syringes allow you to mix insulin easily by drawing from different vials, an advantage for many living with diabetes. Choosing the right syringe and needle size is important for both personal comfort and the effectiveness of insulin delivery.
Syringe and Needle Sizes
Insulin syringes and needles both come in a variety of sizes. Which one is right for you depends on your age, insulin dosage, and personal comfort level.
Common syringe sizes
– 3/10 cc syringe used for administering 30 units or less
– ½ cc syringe used for doses of 30 to 50 unites
– 1 cc syringes used for doses of 50 - 100 units (these marked in 2-unit   measurements)Â
As a rule, it’s recommended that you use the smallest syringe size that can accommodate your largest insulin dosage.
Common needle sizes
Syringe needles are measured in both length and gauge (thickness). Common lengths are: 3/16-inch, 5/16-inch, and ½-inch. Gauges usually run from 28 to 31, with the higher number being the thinner needle.
Which one is right for you? That’s a decision to make with your doctor. However, it’s important that the needle is long enough to easily reach into the subcutaneous fatty tissue beneath the skin without extending into the muscle.
Thinner needles tend to be less painful, but it also takes longer for the insulin to be delivered. So, if you require a large insulin dose a thicker needle may prove beneficial. For children, shorter and thinner needles are usually recommended to minimize discomfort.
NEVER USE A SYRINGE OR NEEDLE MORE THAN ONCE! ALWAYS DISCARD IMMEDIATELY AFTER USE IN A SHARPS CONTAINER.
Talk to your doctor
Deciding on the right insulin syringe and needle size is a personal decision that should be made alongside your diabetes physician and based upon your specific body type and insulin requirements.
